Many homeowners think painting is simply about applying a fresh coat of paint over the wall. But if there are cracks, peeling areas or damaged surfaces, proper preparation is just as important as the paint itself.
1. Cracks Should Be Repaired Before Painting
Visible crack lines should first be checked, opened slightly if necessary, and properly filled with suitable plaster or filler.
Simply brushing paint over a crack may hide it temporarily, but the crack can become visible again after some time.
2. Loose or Peeling Paint Must Be Removed
If the existing paint has poor adhesion, painting directly over it will not solve the problem.
The loose areas should be scraped and prepared before applying the appropriate sealer and finishing coats.
Otherwise, the new paint may peel together with the old layer underneath.
3. Sealer Is Important for Problem Walls
For walls or ceilings with previous peeling, powdery surfaces, stains or other difficult conditions, a suitable sealer can help stabilise the surface before repainting.
For certain problem areas, an oil-based sealer may provide better protection and adhesion than simply applying another coat of emulsion paint.
4. Mould Should Not Just Be Covered With Paint
Painting directly over mould does not remove the underlying problem.
The affected area should be cleaned and treated properly first. Where suitable, anti-mould formulated paint can then be applied after preparation.
It is also important to identify possible moisture, condensation or water-leakage problems because paint alone cannot stop an active water source.
5. Good Painting Is Mostly About Preparation
The finishing coat is what homeowners see, but much of the quality comes from the work done before painting:
• Protecting furniture and flooring
• Scraping loose paint
• Plastering holes and visible crack lines
• Sanding uneven areas
• Applying the correct sealer or undercoat where required
• Allowing sufficient drying time between coats
Proper preparation helps the finished paint look smoother and last longer.
