House Painting Tips: Why Proper Preparation Matters Before Painting

Painting your home may look like a simple DIY project. Buy some paint, prepare a roller and brush, apply masking tape and start painting.

However, from our experience at A&J Painting & Handyman, the actual painting is only one part of the job. Proper preparation and protection before painting are equally important if you want a clean and professional finish.

Recently, we came across a homeowner who had attempted to paint his own home before contacting professional painters for help.

Although masking tape had been applied, paint still managed to seep and drip beyond the taped areas. Paint marks were left on the skirting, window frames and door frames. Unfortunately, the homeowner also injured his hand while carrying out the work.

Eventually, professional painters were still needed to rectify and complete the painting.

Why Can Paint Still Get Under Masking Tape?

Simply sticking masking tape around an area does not guarantee that paint will not seep underneath it.

The surface may be dusty, uneven or textured. Tape may also not be pressed down properly along the edges. Applying too much paint around the taped area can also cause paint to run beneath the tape.

Experienced painters know how much paint to apply near protected surfaces and how to prepare and mask different areas correctly.

What Should Be Protected Before Painting?

Before painting begins, areas that are not being painted should be properly protected.

This can include flooring, furniture, skirting, switches, sockets, windows, window frames, doors, door frames and other nearby fittings.

Taking additional time to protect these areas can save much more time later.

Removing dried paint from flooring, timber, aluminium frames or other finished surfaces can be difficult and may even damage the original finish.

Wall Preparation Is Just as Important

Before applying new paint, the wall and ceiling condition should also be checked.

Common problems include:

  • Hairline cracks
  • Screw or nail holes
  • Peeling paint
  • Powdery or chalky surfaces
  • Mould
  • Water stains
  • Uneven plaster
  • Previous paint that has poor adhesion

Depending on the condition, scraping, plastering, sanding or the correct type of sealer may be required before repainting.

Painting directly over an existing problem may make the wall look better temporarily, but the problem can return again.

DIY Painting Can Take Longer Than Expected

DIY painting can certainly be suitable for someone who has the time, experience and proper equipment.

However, homeowners should consider the amount of preparation involved as well as the physical work required.

Moving furniture, covering belongings, climbing ladders, preparing walls, painting ceilings, cleaning up paint spills and completing several coats can be tiring.

Safety should also be considered when working at height or using tools and ladders.
